Legend has it that a miracle of healing took place connected to the image of the Madonna. The temple was built as a place of pilgrimage and as a testimony of the greatness of the city of Todi. Attributed to Bramante, it was actually built over a hundred years with the contribution of numerous famous architects such as Peruzzi, Vignola and Antonio da Sangallo the younger.
