View of Thurant Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The ruins of Thurant Castle (also Thurandt) stand on a broad slate spur high above the village of Alken on the Moselle. It lies in the district of Mayen-Koblenz (Rhineland-Palatinate) and belongs to the type of spur castles. A special feature - in addition to the location on the steep shoulder of the valley - are the vineyards on the sunny side.

Moselle - Koblenz towards Cochem. With Thurant Castle & Rainbow.

The outward journey was up the river on the right side of the river, the bike path leads mostly along the vineyards, in the small villages it is sometimes more mountainous, unfortunately no open restaurants along the Moselle. On the way back down the river, you could alternately take a break with beer or coffee. Unfortunately, half of the route …

We drove from Alken to Koblenz on the other side of the Moselle

Unfortunately there is no cycle path between Dieblich and Moselweiss and you have to ride on the busy road. The other side of the Moselle is definitely more bike-friendly. Otherwise it was a nice half-day tour.

Showing Translation

The first stretch on the main road (approx. 10 km) is not that exciting. The other Moselle stretch back, above the railway, all the more worthwhile.

Showing Translation

A very nice route on the first side of the Moselle, but the other side of the Moselle can only be accessed via a federal road from Dieblich!
That was no longer nice and, in my opinion, dangerous!

Today, in dry weather, we walked the last "meters" to the mouth of the Moselle and the Rhine.
I'm done. :-)

A beautiful beginner's tour along the Moselle, starting from the Knaus Campingpark Koblenz via
Güls and the charming communities of Winningen,
Kobern-Gondorf and Lehmen with their old half-timbered houses to Kattenes
