Splügen

Highlight • Settlement

The southern Swiss town of Splügen was and is a typical mountain pass village. Then as now, merchants, artists and tourists stopped here before continuing on their way north or south. Before the construction of the Bernardino and Gotthard tunnels, the Splügen Pass was the only direct transfer route to the south. Old warehouses and customs posts still characterize the times of yesteryear.

You can live particularly peacefully and eat very, very well in the “Hotel Bodenhaus”. It is rumored that Napoleon, Queen Victoria and Albert lived here. More information: hotel-bodenhaus.ch.

Kiosk & Snack S. Bernardino North

Highlight • Rest Area

After the Splügen Pass and before the climb up the S Bernardino, it's a good opportunity to get some refreshment. The lady has been running the kiosk for over 40 years and still enjoys it. Bratwurst is recommended, but there are also plenty of snacks and Rivella.

San Bernardino Pass Summit and Lake

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The San Bernardino Pass connects the Misox with the Rheinwald and is located at 2,066 meters. At the pass summit, there is a restaurant and a bus stop, making the location easily accessible.
The open high mountain landscape with small lakes and wide open spaces is well suited for a break.

San Bernardino Pass from Hinterrhein

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

From Hinterrhein, the climb to the San Bernardino Pass begins immediately with several switchbacks that quickly take you uphill. You'll enjoy beautiful views of the valley before your handlebars head for the pass. The long road before the summit leads you through a gray-green landscape of rocks and meadows, revealing a view of the aging hospice just before the end. At Laghetto Moesola at 2,066 meters, you've made it.

Beautiful village with a fountain and a small supermarket. Since 2019, the village has belonged to the municipality of Rheinwald along with Hinterrhein, Medels and Splügen.
