A truly touching poem, the panorama that inspired it was perhaps only partially understood when the recent fires occurred.

Entrance to the Schönburgtunnel

Highlight • Structure

Continuing along the path that surrounds the entire sacred area of Monte San Michele, between Cima 2 and Cima 3, you come across the entrance portal of the Schönburgtunnel, one of the main defense constructions of the Austro-Hungarian army. Its construction began in 1915 and was carried out by the 7th Feldjager battalion who dedicated the tunnel to the general of the 6th infantry division, Alois von Schönburg Hartenstein, protagonist of the Third Battle of the Isonzo in October 1915.

The structure crosses the Mount and reaches the opposite slope. It was used as a shelter for the soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army and as a passage for the reserves towards the front line. At the other end, a machine gun emplacement had been created which could control the territory between Peak 2 and Peak 3.
Unfortunately, today the tunnel has collapsed and can only be visited partially thanks to the work of the Karst Speleological Group Association of San Martino del Carso. The entrance still retains the original structure and stones, as can be clearly seen on the pediment which bears the original inscription FJB 7 Schönburgtunnel FEB 1916, i.e. the authors and the date of completion of the works.

View of the Gulf of Monfalcone

Highlight • Viewpoint

Kremenjak (235m) high hill, which stands on the border between Italy and Slovenia, which is visible as there is a watchtower at the top. Several paths lead to it, from hiking to macadam. From the top there is a very nice view on all sides. Below us is the Molfancone and the entire Gulf of Trieste and the Italian plain. When the weather is nice, it is nice to see the Cape Savudrjis all the way to the Dolomites and the Julian Alps and the Slovenian and Italian Karst. The entire area is also littered with ditches and remnants in the form of bomb particles and as remnants of World War I, as fierce fighting took place in the area during the offensives.
