Zandpoort

Highlight • Historical Site

The Zandpoort is a city gate on the Zandstraat, it dates from before 1400. On the basis of old foundations, it can be deduced that the size of the original Zandpoort was almost twice as large as the current gate. The facades of the semi-circular walls were built of Gobertange sand-lime brick. Iron ore from the region was processed along the inside. In 1643 the gate was repaired and rebuilt. The semicircular walls disappeared; a smaller entrance gate with a flat rectangular facade in the Renaissance style was added. One side still reveals a part of the original construction. The Zandpoort is a protected monument.

Bovenpoort Herentals

Highlight • Monument

The first mention of the Bovenpoort (also called Hoogpoort) dates from 1361. The facade is clad with gobertange sandstone. A lot of ironstone from the region has been used inside. The ridge height of the upper gate is 10.60 meters. The gate opening is 4.7 meters high. Like the Zandpoort, the Bovenpoort was part of the ramparts of the city. The gate has an eventful history and has fallen into disrepair and rebuilt a number of times. Because it was in a very bad condition and there was no money to carry out repairs, the aldermen decided in 1754 to have a large part of the gate demolished. After all, the gates no longer had any military use. A real restoration followed in 1772, which determined the current appearance of the gate. The two copper vases on the roof were then set up.

Fish Ladder

Highlight • Structure

The migration of fish in streams and rivers is made impossible by all kinds of structures (watermills, locks, weirs, etc.) that were erected in the past for various uses of the waterways. In 1996 it was agreed that free migration of fish species in all hydrographic basins of the Benelux countries should be made possible again.

Le Paige Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle dates from 1892. Elements from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism form a neo-style. In the interior we find an impulse to Art Nouveau. The wrought iron fence around the front garden is made by the Herental iron foundry Van Aerschot.

Oud Gasthuis Herentals

Highlight • Historical Site

The Chapel of the Oude Gasthuis Site, built before 1253, is undoubtedly the oldest in the Kempen. It gradually evolved from a gasthof to a hospital. There are four buildings whose architecture is of exceptional historical importance. The entrance gate, the atmospheric chapel, the old monastery and the old guest house barn all date from the seventeenth century. The administration of the Herentals OCMW is now housed in the old monastery. The chapel, also under the management of the CPAS, is still regularly used for weddings, baptisms and funeral ceremonies.

Beguinage Herentals

Highlight • Historical Site

Most of the buildings in the beguinage are managed by the OCMW. Some houses are rented out, others are leased. The leaseholders are allowed to live in the houses, but are obliged to renovate them under strict regulations.
