The mill was owned by the lords of Oombergen for centuries. In 1790, shortly before the French period, the mill was owned by Constantin de Preud'homme d'Hailly de Nieuport, Viscount of Nieuwpoort and Oombergen. The Nieuwpoortmolen (also known as "the mill of Oombergen") derives its name from that family.

On 20 May 1911, the mill burned down due to a lightning strike and was replaced by a stone one, which was in operation as a mill until 1949. In 1950, the English cross system, the cast iron bottom drive and the millstones were transferred to the Ter Claere mill in Sint-Denijs.
From 1983 the mill body was converted into a house, since 2004 it has been a holiday home.
