Herne East Lock

Highlight • Structure

Impressive technical structure, which can be easily observed in its function if you have some time. In the upper reaches of the canal behind the lock you can see how much the water level is higher than the surrounding landscape due to subsidence due to coal extraction.

The view from the directly adjacent canal path offers a great view of a wetland with fascinating development of nature and is a spectacle that is not particularly often encountered here in the Ruhr area.

Bogomir Ecker has chosen the so-called "Herner Meer" (near the city port of Recklinghausen) for his extraordinary installation. At the end of a pier, which lies like a peninsula between the Rhine-Herne Canal and the marina, a sculpture more than twenty meters high is in the water - as if the rise of the water level or a sinking of the earth's surface had sunk this work! Almost a matter of course is a street lamp in the water, which illuminates this sculpture like a bedside lamp at nightfall. In many of his sculptures the sculptor Bogomir Ecker works with abstraction. The individual parts of the sculpture seem to be casts of already existing objects and forms of everyday life. As a whole complex, however, they are unrecognizable. As if stacked in a childish puzzle, challenging the gravity, the sculpture threatens to collapse at the next gust of wind.
