Hohenhain Railway Tunnel

With the old Hohenhain railway tunnel, the gap in the rail network between Freudenberg and Rothemühle was closed at the beginning of the 20th century. Trains only ran here for 80 years, until rail operations were discontinued in the 1980s. Today, the 400 meter long tunnel is part of the Sieg-Bigge cycle path, which meanders from Freudenberg via Wendener Hütte, Olpe, Attendorn and all the way to Finnentrop on the Lenne.

Alte Flecken (Freudenberg's historic old town)

Freudenberg is located in the historic Siegerland in a hilly low mountain range between 243 and 505 m above sea level. Most of the landscape belongs to the Freudenberger Bergland, which in turn is part of the Siegerland natural area. The southern part of the city belongs to the Giebelwald mountain range, which also includes the 527 m high Giebelberg. Although its peak is in the Niederfischbach area, its slope on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate forms the highest point in Freudenberg's urban area. The 17 districts are spread over an area of approx. 55 km², which consists of approx. 2/3 of deciduous and spruce forest.
The three longest rivers in the city are the Asdorf, the Fischbach and the Alche. The approximately 6.5 km long Fischbach flows west of Niederndorf into the Asdorf. This in turn flows into the Sieg after 8.6 km in the city area and a total length of 20 km near Kirchen. The Alche has its source north of Bühl near the border with the district of Olpe and flows about 5 km in the city area before the river flows via Seelbach to Siegen and there into the Sieg.

St. Sebastianus Church, Friesenhagen

Die Pfarrkirche in Friesenhagen wurde erstmals 1131 als Besitz des Bonner Cassiusstiftes erwähnt. Wer das Gotteshaus besucht, erkennt die Spuren der engen Verbundenheit mit der adeligen Familie von Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg sowie die Zeit der Franziskaner im Land. Anfangs stand hier eine dreischiffige Basilika mit Westturm in romanischem Baustil. Vermutlich wurde um 1500 an gleicher Stelle, unter Beibehaltung des romanischen Turmes, eine gotische Kirche errichtet.

Der Bildhauer Peter Sasse aus Attendorn schuf 1696 den Hochaltar. Die Figur der Himmelskönigin wird eingerahmt von je zwei gewundenen Säulen. Das Prunkstück der Kirche, die „Wildenburger Madonna“, eine fast lebensgroße Sandsteinfigur, wurde um 1520 in Köln angefertigt.

Da die Kirche zu klein war, wurde zwischen 1740 und 1742 das Langhaus neu gebaut. Doch schon 1751 richtete ein Brand schweren Schaden an. Der Helm des Turmes stürzte mit den Glocken ein, und Dach sowie Gewölbe wurden schwer beschädigt. Nach wenigen Jahren musste die Kirche erneut wieder aufgebaut werden. Der alte Turm wurde erhöht und erhielt seinen barocken Helm mit einer der schönsten Laternen unter den Barockkirchen des Rheinlandes. Ein schlichter vierachsiger Saalbau mit flacher Decke wurde als neues Mittelschiff errichtet.

Die nördliche Seitenkapelle, die sogenannte „Grafenkammer“, enthält die Grabdenkmäler des Sebastian von Hatzfeldt und seiner Gemahlin Luzia sowie seiner Mutter Katharina, geborene von Selbach. Ein kunstvoll geschmiedetes Eisengitter trennt die Kapelle vom Kirchenschiff.

In der südlichen Seitenkapelle steht ein einfacher Barockaltar des hl. Franziskus aus Holz. Der achteckige Taufstein im hinteren Bereich der Kirche stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Eine Pieta aus der 1. Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts steht seit 1963 im Erdgeschoss des Turmes, welches als Kriegergedächtnisstätte eingerichtet wurde.

Gottesdienste werden sporadisch auch in der Hauskapelle des Schlosses Crottorf (erbaut 16./17. Jhd.) und in der Rita-Kapelle in Bettorf (erbaut 2016) gehalten.
