The "wire bridge" has a long and eventful past. Already in 1870 a suspension bridge between the old town and the so-called Unterneustadt was built instead of a ferry connection. For the re-planning or rehabilitation of the bridge some boundary conditions were clearly defined: takeover of the main geometry, takeover of the massive pylons (based on wooden piles), takeover of the elongated abutments (ballast foundations), renewal of the entire rope construction, renewal of the superstructure with retention of the half-timbered training for monument protection reasons, truss girder in steel, walking area with precast concrete elements, laying of the supporting rope anchorage in the abutment area upwards, concreting of the abutment cavities.
