"Grape Man" (Statue "Winegrower")

Highlight • Monument

The "Winzer" was created in 1936 on the occasion of the Bad Dürkheim exhibition "2000 years of viticulture" by the sculptor Adolf Bernd (1869 - 1942) from Kaiserslautern. The sculpture shows a logel carrier (logel = basket on the back with which grapes are transported after the harvest).

The "grape man" (popular) is one of the symbols of Bad Dürkheim.

These stepping stones are part of the renatured Isenach in Bad Dürkheim's Kurpark. A nice place to pause and refresh tired hiking feet in the cool water of the shallow stream.

The idea of creating a giant barrel to memorialize Palatinate and therefore also German wine came to winery owner Fritz Keller when he built a "normal" barrel for his master cooper exam in the early 1930s. After a long period of preparation, he set about realizing his dream at the beginning of 1934.

The undertaking was huge. In the Black Forest, almost 200 fir trees, each around 40 meters high, were felled for the gigantic barrel construction. One Christmas tree was needed to make one of the 178 barrel staves, each 15 meters long and 15 centimeters thick. The transport of these extremely long fir trunks from the Black Forest to the Palatinate was only possible at night and with a special permit. Fritz Keller and his helpers processed more than 200 cubic meters of wood to create the giant barrel with a diameter of 13.5 meters and a volume of 1.7 million liters. After weeks of hard work, the giant barrel stood, which today has become an eye-catcher next to the Bad Dürkheim - Kaiserslautern federal road. Until 1934, the giant barrel in Heidelberg Castle was the largest barrel in the world with a length of nine meters, a diameter of seven meters and a volume of 221,000 liters. In contrast to the gigantic Dürkheimer barrel, its “Heidelberg brother” was already filled once.

Bad Dürkheim Graduation Tower

Highlight • Monument

This imposing structure, over 300 meters long, was originally built to extract salt. Ultimately, this was discontinued entirely in 1867. However, in the context of the spa town of Bad Dürkheim, which was developing during this period, it was quickly established that salt flats, in addition to their purely economic function as salt production sites, also have a very high health value. When the brine is trickled from the Maxquelle springing up in the Kurpark, large quantities of minerals are released into the air in the form of microscopically fine droplets, the aerosols, which are absorbed by visitors through their respiratory tract. It was recognized very early on that inhaling this air on the ambulatory and in the immediate vicinity of the salt works can have a soothing effect, especially on respiratory diseases. This effect can still be experienced today on a tour of the salt works.
