St John the Evangelist Church, Welburn

Highlight • Religious Site

This lovely church is dedicated to St John the Evangelist and, interestingly, built in the 1860s in the 14th century style. The church can be seen from a good few miles around the village - very noticeable as it's so tall among the other lower buildings in Welburn.

Pretty Wood, King's Oak and the Four Faces Monument

It's a magnificent experience walking in Pretty Wood, which is very appropriately named - it's very pretty here!

On your way, you will pass the ancient tree, King's Oak, which is thought to be over 400 years old. Further into the forest, you will come upon the Four Faces monument from the 18th century. And outside of these, it's a beautiful forest to be in.

Welcome to Egypt!... Ok, not quite, but it's a very unusual sight to be sure in the middle of North Yorkshire!

One of the many wonders and oddities in the Castle Howard grounds, this one was built in 1728, and it is surrounded by four pairs of piers. Easy to walk up to and admire from up close!

An interesting folly (pretending to be medieval) and a tower within the Castle Howard grounds. These are mock fortifications - fascinating! There are great views from here towards the village of Welburn.

Great ride, very varied and mostly off road. No massive climbs although there are some fairly steep bits, but these are short. The ground was very dry when we rode it yet there was still some mud in a few places in the woods - nothing to worry about but perhaps not a route for wet conditions.
