The castle dates back to the time of Count Peter II of Savoy (1255). Below the portal from 1516, which was rebuilt several times and dates from 1755 in its present form, there was a cistern that is only marked in the paving today. The large, square tower, the so-called keep or "Luegisland", served Adrian von Bubenberg to monitor what was happening during the battle. While the castle used to be the residence of the sheriffs or was used as a hospital, barracks and prison, it is now the seat of the Oberamt of the Freiburg lake district.

Berntor (Bern Gate), Murten

Today's Berntor dates from the second half of the 18th century. The master builder was Niklaus Hebler, who built Bern's clock tower. The movement was made by the Ducommun brothers from La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1712. The three weight stones are cannonballs from the Murten battle and have to be pulled up by hand every 24 hours.
