Grimberger Sichel Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Get on the bike at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum, cycle on the Erzbahn route up to the Zoom Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen and then continue the tour through the Emscherbruch to the Hoheward heap in the district of Recklinghausen: the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Rhein-Herne canal at the harbor Grimberg makes that possible. It connects the recreational areas north and south of the canal directly and without long detours.

The asymmetrical steel structure, whose name Grimberger Sichel was found at a public competition, crosses the canal in a semicircular arc on the western edge of the harbor. Suspended only by a 48 meter high steel pylon on the north side of the canal, the curved bridge has a span of around 150 meters. The northern, 37-meter-long ramp is formed by concrete retaining walls, and the southern, 34-meter-long ramp is made as a dam. More than 600 cubic meters of concrete and 235 meters of large bored piles for the abutments as well as 400 tons of steel and 465 meters of rope for the suspended structure were used.

The bridge was awarded the 2010 European Steel Bridges Award by the European Steel Construction Convention. This honors outstanding steel bridge constructions in Europe.

Single Trails Halde Hoppenbruch

Highlight • MTB Park

One of numerous trails on the Hoppenbruch heap that can be easily combined with one another. So keep your eyes open and just try a new branch. The good thing is that it is almost impossible to get lost on the compact dump site.

I would never have expected something like that up here. Crazy. 💈

The sundial, which is around 3,000 square meters in size, is located on the south plateau (140 meters). A stainless steel obelisk with a height of 8.65 meters and a weight of 1.5 tons acts as a pointer. Its shadow lines make it possible to read the date and time on the circular plane with a diameter of 62 meters. 🧭

Horizon Observatory on Hoheward

Highlight • Monument

There is an official network of mountain bike trails on the Hoheward dump in Herten. Information and the route can be found at: landschaftspark-hoheward.de/hoheward/aktiv/mountainbike.html.

But a trip here is not only worthwhile for this 6.5-kilometer cross-country route. The heap rises more than 100 meters above the surrounding area and the paths up are correspondingly steep. From above you have a fantastic view over the Ruhr area and the southern Münsterland. There is a large sundial and the Hoheward Observatory on the plateau of the heap, which, however, has not been open to the public since shortly after it opened due to construction defects. Enduro riders are out and about on the neighboring Hoppenbruch heap.

One glance at the lake is enough for us to want to immerse ourselves in this deep silence. In a figurative sense, of course. So, get off, sit down, and simply let your senses wander.

Wheel of Fortune Exercise: Mindful Inside and Out

Mindfulness has enjoyed a truly successful career in recent years. And that's a good thing! This is certainly helped by the fact that it can be practiced easily and almost anywhere. A brief moment of peace is enough, and we can focus our attention on our perceptions. At the same time, it's not about constantly "immersing" ourselves in the here and now.

You read that right: As with any good and effective training, mindfulness also benefits us most with the right dose – time and intensity. And we can also train it specifically. Try it: Choose specific perceptions from the list below and then focus your attention on them. You'll notice that the boundary between outside and inside is fluid. Tip: If you close your eyes, it will usually be easier.
