In 1778, the bookseller and publisher Johann Christoph Imhof-Burckhardt took over the mill. In 1788 he replaced the manufacturing part located on the canal with a two-story building with a three-story roof structure. In 1850, the Hugo brothers' tobacco factory moved into the building. From 1957 it served as a storage room until the building was restored and the museum was set up in 1980.
In 2011 the buildings were extensively renovated and the museum expanded. The exhibition was completely revised and more clearly structured.
Today the main building (Gallizian Mill) houses the actual museum with all the workshops and an event room. The neighboring Stegreif Mill houses a café and the entrance ticket office. The Rych Mill, located south of the Gallizian Mill, houses the shop and the museum workshops. A fourdrinier paper machine from 1964 can also be viewed there.
