Menzenschwand Village

Highlight • Settlement

The old town hall in Menzenschwand-Hinterdorf has housed the Winterhalter Museum "Le Petit Salon" since 2008. The museum is dedicated to the two painters brothers Franz Xaver and Hermann Winterhalter. You were born in Menzenschwand and grew up there. From Menzenschwand they became one of the most famous portraitists of the 19th century, portraying numerous regents of that time.

In addition to the exhibition rooms located here, the neighboring former church is also to be converted into an exhibition and art house in the future.

St. Blasien Cathedral (Dom St. Blasius)

Highlight • Religious Site

The so-called "Black Forest Cathedral" was inaugurated in 1783 as an abbey church with what was then the third largest church dome in Europe. The dome - diameter 36 meters, height 63 meters - is still one of the largest in Europe. The architect Pierre Michel d'Ixnard built the building based on the model of the Pantheon in Rome. The proportions of the building are perfectly coordinated.

Schmidt House Arcades, St. Blasien

Highlight • Historical Site

Haus Schmidt Arkaden St. Blasien

In 1768 the monastery in St. Blasien burned down. Prince Abbot Martin Gerbert had a hospital built on the opposite side of the Alb using the stones from the completely destroyed baroque church. In the post-monastic period, the hospital became privately owned and business premises were added. Between 1905 and 1906, the printer and bookseller Johann Weißenberger built a multi-story house with rich woodwork to the east of the hospital. At that time, Grand Duke Friedrich recommended that the St. Blaises build new buildings in the "refined Swiss style". This is how numerous houses with woodwork, bay windows and turrets were built. One of the surviving houses of this type is today's Schmidt Arkaden house.
