Cäcilienplatz Park

A town square located to the west of Oldenburg's old town, surrounded by streets on all sides and bordering the landscaped ramparts to the northeast, where it continues. As early as 1860, Hero Dietrich Hillerns envisaged a square on this spot when he first thought about creating a new town district. The problematic terrain conditions and competing ideas for use meant that it was not until 1880 that an open square could be created, which was designed as a promenade garden in the spirit of landscape garden art with lawns, curved paths, small groups of trees and lush ornamental beds. The square subsequently experienced several changes through interim uses and was finally developed into an inward-facing ornamental complex at the beginning of the 20th century, leaving the large trees surrounding it. This was redesigned as a quiet garden with an orthogonal structure in keeping with the times. Today, there is a large rectangular lawn lined with trees in the southwest of the complex, and a smaller design in the style of a baroque parterre in the northeast. To the southeast, southwest and northwest, the complex is bordered by a densely overgrown border to the street, while the connection to the ramparts to the northeast remains open. The square was finally given additional equipment and recognition through the installation of monuments and sculptures: Bust of Karl Jaspers, 1983 by Christa Baumgärtel; Bust of Helene Lange, 1995 by Udo Reimann; Megalithic stone, 1995 by Makoto Fujiwara and Karl Prantl.
Justification for the monument
Cäcilienplatz, which has been a tradition since the 1880s, is an important design component both of the green design of the inner ring with the ramparts and of the urban development concept for the settlement of the Dobben with the Dobbenviertel. Even if a simplified design is outdated today, the layout is able to convey the original intention for the creation of this square in its basic layout. The park has a positive effect on viewers due to its special design and the old trees that have been preserved. In the context of local history, it has a special value as a testimony due to its visual nature. There is a public interest in preserving the green area due to its historical and urban development significance. The complex is particularly interesting for Oldenburg in terms of urban development history, as it is a design element of a Wilhelminian-era civic quarter that marks an elitist structure in a manner typical of the time.
