View of the Gemünden maar

Highlight • Lake

This maar is not only very beautiful and accessible via the MaareGlück-Rundweg, but there is also a forest café and a swimming pool here. You can swim in the maar and rent boats, and the sunbathing lawn is on the sunny side. However, you have to watch out for ticks. Those who want to can jump into the maar from a seven-and-a-half-meter high diving tower.

Lake of the Dead

Highlight • Lake

Numerous legends surround the quiet Totenmaar. According to one legend, a castle once stood at this spot, inhabited by a benevolent count with his servants, his hard-hearted wife, and their only child. One day, the count returned home from the hunt and found only a lake where his castle had stood. It had sunk into the earth with all its inhabitants, leaving behind a lake, the Totenmaar. As if by a miracle, a cradle appeared on the surface, in which his child drifted safely to shore. The count's horse dug out a spring from the ground during an exclamation by its master. The count later built a chapel out of gratitude for his child's rescue, which, like the spring, is still preserved today.

Das Weinfelder Maar 1878 (Die Gartenlaube)
The Eifel painter Richard Franzen from Mehren dedicated the following poem to this maar:

Droben steht noch die Kapelle,
hier im schönen Eifelland,
wo vor ein paar hundert Jahren
einst das Dörfchen Weinfeld stand.
Pest und Armut, schlechte Zeiten,
zwang die Menschen in der Not,
ihre Heimstatt zu verlassen,
letzter Zug im Abendrot.
Doch nach Weinfeld kehren wieder
Stille Schläfer Jahr für Jahr,
um für immer auszuruhen
auf dem Berg am Totenmaar

Dronke Tower on the Mäuseberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Dronketurm on the Mäuseberg you will definitely be rewarded with a direct view of the Gemündener Maar, which is worth a trip in every season. The platform on which the tower is located is ideal for enjoying the breathtaking view for a little longer and taking a breather in the wooden benches and loungers built for it.

The Adolf Dronke Tower on the 561 meter high Mäuseberg was erected in 1902 as a memorial to Dr. Adolf Dronke, who founded the Eifel Association in 1888. From this approximately 11 meter high observation tower, you have a wonderful panoramic view of the wide volcanic landscape of Eifel. Its viewing platform is exactly 166.5 meters above the Gemündener Maar.

If you walk a bit over the plateau, you have an impressive view of the Weinfelder Maar, which is also called Totenmaar, from the side opposite the Dronketurm.

Gemündener Maar

Highlight • Lake

The smallest of the 3 maars is nestled nicely in the crater about 100m lower than the surrounding area. A beautiful circular path leads around the Maar, a transition to the other Maaren and a path up to the observation tower. Swimming in the outdoor pool and boating are possible here.

Gemündener Maar

Highlight • Lake

The Gemünden Maar is the smallest of the three Daun Maars. These are three particularly well-known crater lakes in the Volcanic Eifel region around the town of Daun in Rhineland-Palatinate. They were formed by volcanic explosions approximately 10,000 years ago.

The Daun Maars are located in the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park, which covers an area of 970 square kilometers near the Moselle and Ormont on the Belgian border. Numerous hiking trails introduce you to the landscape with its maars and volcanoes. Detailed information about the nature park and its flora and fauna can be found here: nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-vulkaneifel.

Relaxed route for hikers of all ages, as well as for geocachers. It's very varied, up and down. Have fun 🙋🏻‍♂️😁

I've wanted to see the Schalkenmehrer Maare in the Vulkaneifel for so long. Today was the day, and I got a closer look at two of them at least. The actual Schalkenmehrer Maar will have to wait a few more weeks, as time was limited today.
It's beautiful to hike there, the ascents and descents were tough, as the Maare …

We start at the upper parking lot because it's free! The tour is great, but at the Mouse Tower you have to be a little careful to take the right path 😅

Yesterday after our weekend shopping, we made our way to Daun to the hiker's car park at the Maaren.
The aim was to explore the Maare and the surrounding area. After sighting the Weinfelder Maar, we circled the Gemünder Maar.
For the Schalkenmehrener Maar, the view of the Maar and Schalkenmehren was enough.

Unfortunately the weather is not so good anymore, it is raining, it is cold and windy. Nevertheless, drove to Daun to do a small hike at least on 2 of the 3 maars. The Weinfelder Maar with the small Martinskapelle

and the Gemünden Maar. Here in the Eifel, maars are circular volcanic vents that have filled with water

This time, I combined the Weinfelder with the Gemündener. They're even more beautiful in the autumnal colors.
