Gottorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

A beautiful castle not to be missed. A visit is highly recommended. Even as a child I was particularly fascinated by the bog bodies and the Nydam boat.
Gottorf Castle, this magnificent white building at the entrance to Schleswig from the 15th century, was once the residence of the Gottorf dukes. They made Schleswig the cultural center of Northern Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Schleswig Museum Island offers an exciting excursion into the history of Schleswig-Holstein, overwhelming archaeological treasures and works of art. One of the highlights is the castle itself, which now houses the Museum of Archeology and the Museum of Art and Cultural History.

Holm District, Schleswig

Highlight • Settlement

The Holm is one of the oldest parts of Schleswig. The foundation goes back to the year 1000. It is still a fishing settlement today, although there are not that many fishermen left on the Holm. In the middle of the complex is the cemetery with a small chapel. The term Holm has Danish roots and means "small island". And in fact, until the beginning of the last century you could only reach the Holm via a bridge.

St. Johannis Monastery and Biblical Garden

Highlight • Religious Site

The St. Johannis monastery off Schleswig is also on the Holm. This rectangular building, with its modest dimensions, barely 80 × 60 meters in size, was founded in 1194 as a Benedictine monastery and was converted into a women's convent in 1536. Today there are even some private rental apartments in the monastery buildings.

The view compensates a little for the very poor condition of the cycle path on Schleidörferstrasse.

Missunde Ferry on the Schlei

Highlight • Rest Area

"Ferryman get it". For more than 500 years (first mention in 1471), there is a ferry at the Missunder Enge. One suspects, however, that many people were transferred by boat from one side to the other much earlier. Already in 1115, Missunde is called "Versundt" in historical sources. During the Schleswig-Holstein survey and the German-Danish war, the narrowest part of the Schlei was a strategically important place and often fought over. A documentation of these events can be found in the Village Museum Brodersby, Missunder Fährstraße 4.
Perhaps interesting is this report: de.wikisource.org/wiki/Von_Schleswig_nach_Missunde
Today, in peaceful times, we can use the ferry as a shortcut to get to the Schwansener side. On the ferry fit max. 8 cars, with trailer even less. After the start, the Missunde II jerks and twitches once on its steel hawsers (it is a cable ferry) and chugs comfortably to the other shore. There are nostalgic feelings. On the way back the same procedere. With a fare of just € 0.60 / adult on foot a cheap pleasure.
On the Angelner side there is a cozy snack for fish sandwiches and simple small dishes. My fish sandwich was delicious, rolls fresh from the oven, warm and crispy, fish fresh and tender (sherry-sild). Totally nice, friendly elderly landlords and a nice environment with tables and benches inside and outside, as well as a beautifully landscaped outdoor area (with flowers and children's playground) What more could you ask for. Open: Tuesday-Sunday approx. 12.00-approx.19.30, closed on Mondays.
If that's not enough, head to the ferry house at Missunde. Since 1805 there is an inn at this place. Seasonally different opening times. On offer also accommodation and rooms for celebrations. On the homepage you will find the menu as pdf-download. Reads himself promising. I think the prices are not too high for an economy with such an exposed location.
