Steam Tram Locomotive in Prien

The world's oldest steam tramway runs between the train station in Prien and the harbor in Prien-Stock. From there, the Chiemsee ferry takes you to the islands.

The narrow-gauge railway covers a total distance of 1.91 kilometers and connects Prien station with the Prien-Stock harbor, where the ferry landing stage is located. At Prien station, the Chiemseebahn is ready for departure on its own track.

The journey takes about eight minutes, which corresponds to an average speed of about 14 kilometers per hour. As a special feature, it is normally operated by steam during the main season and is considered today to be the world's oldest continuously operating steam tramway. The small, coal-fired local railway has been a listed monument since 1980 and, with its nostalgic character, is well worth a ride.

Today only a small afternoon tour, as we were out on foot in the morning. Sometimes it was more of a mountain bike route.
