Gutenzell Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

The beginnings of the monastery are in the dark. A first documentary evidence dates from May 29, 1238, but marks the end of the foundation phase: Pope Gregory IX. took the Cella Dei Abbey under his protection and literally incorporated it into the Cistercian order. There was an abbess at the head of the convent, and there was already a church of her own. Their patronage of St. Kosmas and Damian, atypical for the order, suggests that the newly founded monastery had been equipped with an existing church. The remains of the wall from the 12th century uncovered in the area of the monastery church are in harmony with this. Cella Dei (Gotteszell) was soon replaced by the name Bona Cella, which was first documented in 1259, and its German version, Guotencelle.
