St Andrew's Church, Aldborough

Highlight • Religious Site

Aldborough is the site of the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum, and it is believed that the church lies on the site of a temple to Mercury. Two churches successively occupied the site before the present building was commenced, in the early 14th century. In 1318, the building was partly destroyed by raiders from Scotland, but it was repaired,[1] with a north chantry chapel added in 1333, and the north aisle dating from about 1360. The clerestory dates from the 15th century, the roof was restored in the 16th century, and the south aisle was rebuilt in 1827. The church was Grade I listed in 1966.

Boroughbridge High Street

Highlight • Settlement

The town of Boroughbridge has a bustling high street with plenty of cafes and a bakery for refuelling and recharging.

Boroughbridge is halfway between London and Edinburgh so was historically an important stopover for stage coaches. In 1754 the journey was 10 days in summer and 12 in the winter so an arduous journey. No doubt the hospitality of Boroughbridge (then Burrow Bridge) was very welcome indeed.

Helperby Village

Highlight • Settlement

Helperby is a lovely village with lots of character, even though in the 17th century a fire ripped through the village taking out all the historic buildings.

There is a lovely cafe and deli in Helperby Stores which is popular with cyclists. Well worth a stop for a meal or coffee and cake if you are passing by.
