De Bliksemschicht Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Climb this special lookout tower in a surprising location and discover not only rushing traffic, but also the beautiful city of Breda and its surroundings.

Admire the design
An eye-catching work of art in a surprising environment, that is the Bliksemschicht lookout tower, designed by the Breda artist Martien Kuipers. The tower is located right along the A16, the fast cycle path between Breda and Etten-Leur and the high-speed line over which trains travel at more than 300 kilometers per hour. Speed is therefore the theme of this Z-shaped lookout tower, an ode to the fleeting traveler.

The 22 meter high observation tower stands on a 6 meter high slope and is made entirely of steel. The steel parts are connected with 4800 screws. Due to its Z-shape, the 32-ton lookout tower leans forward. To keep the lookout tower in place, a large concrete box full of sand has been placed as a counterweight. So firmly anchored.

Once at the top of the 80-step staircase, you not only have a view over the highway and the high-speed line, but you also have a view of Breda. Even the Amercentrale in Geertruidenberg can be seen. You can also feel the steel tower moving a bit upstairs, one for the daredevils among us;

View of Breda Castle

Highlight • Castle

Beautiful place to pause for a moment at this historic water gate and let your thoughts travel back in time. In other words, to the Eighty Years' War where the name Spanjaardsgat refers to the ruse with the Turfship of Breda.

Breda Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle of the city of Breda has an important history and is worth a good look (from a distance). It now houses the military academy and is therefore not accessible.

There are four large bicycle tunnels under the A16 on the Liesboslaan. The tunnels form an important connection between the city of Breda and the large rural area De Rith. This area is known for its red fruits, vegetables, forests and ancient hunting land.

Nase Pop (Daniel Stroomer) drew inspiration for the mural from the contrast between city and countryside, two extremes that come together in this place. For this project we painted with Graphenstone, a durable paint that saved almost 27,000 kg of CO2 for this wall. In this way the artwork contributes to a liveable and green city.

The initiative for the largest Blind Wall to date comes from the residents of the area. Together with the Municipality of Breda, they are committed to making the Rith more attractive, safer and better known. This project also includes the murals by Kimberly Rochat on the Sprundelsebaan and Heavenleigh Jeroense on the Moerdijksepostbaan.
