The castle is a playful early Renaissance building from the second half of the 16th century with a corner bay tower, stair tower, outside staircase and loggia. Faded decorative and coat of arms paintings, as well as wooden ceilings, have been preserved in the interiors. A Roman tombstone, which was once located next to the entrance and has been kept in the Bolzano City Museum since 1924, is of historical importance. The residence received its name from the Counts Stachelburg in the 18th century. Schönhaus previously belonged to the Marienberg monastery near Burgeis. All in all it is a very handsome and proud residence which used to be surrounded by a battlemented wall on the street side.
Today the Stachelburg serves as a snack station with a Törggelekeller.
