Piazzetta del Vicariato

Highlight • Historical Site

A quiet and suggestive corner in the historic heart of Brendola, away from the traffic and noise of everyday life, which maintains the ancient appearance of the cobblestone pavement and stone walls. Three important buildings overlook the square: the sober and elegant Villa Pagello from the 17th century, flanked by an imposing barchessa; the 19th century and graceful Maluta villa; the Casa del Vicario, originally from the 14th century but renovated and remodeled several times over the years.

Parish church with an elegant and distinctive neo-Gothic façade, featuring a red diamond pattern on a yellow background, located in the historic center of Brendola, on a hill offering beautiful views of the plain and the Piccole Dolomiti. The small square in which it stands, with its stone buildings and cobblestones, is a charming corner with an ancient and authentic village feel, as is the narrow street that descends alongside the bell tower.

Originally built within the walls of the bishop's castle, it was rebuilt and expanded several times. In the 1930s, it was supposed to be replaced by a much larger parish basilica, given the growing community of Brendola, which required more space. However, work on the imposing building was interrupted by World War II and never resumed: the so-called "Unfinished" church can be seen in the square below.

Bishops' Castle

Highlight • Castle

The medieval castle of Brendola dominated the plain and the passage between the present-day provinces of Vicenza and Verona, which for centuries was a contested border between various states and factions. Precisely because of its important strategic position, it featured an imposing, complex, and fortified architecture. It is also known as the "Bishops' Fortress," having served as the bishop's jurisdiction and refuge for centuries.

Built at least as early as the year 1000, over the centuries it was the scene of battles and sieges, reflecting the vicissitudes of history and changes of power. In 1513, it was occupied by the Spanish and in 1514 reconquered by the Venetian Republic, which ordered its destruction to prevent the castle from "further serving as a potential refuge for Spaniards, Germans, or other enemies of the Republic."

Of the fortress, only the keep (under renovation) and fragments of the walls that once surrounded the entire hill and the old town remain.

Beneath Brendola Castle, in a clearing in the woods, lies an unexpected and spectacular display of historic military vehicles dating back to World War II and the postwar era: a tank, two anti-aircraft guns, two airplanes, and a helicopter!

The visit is completely free and accessible, but we are on the private property of the president of the association that manages the Montecchio Armed Forces Museum: therefore, the utmost respect must be shown for the site and the vehicles.

Vehicles in detail:
• AMX-13 light tank it.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMX-13
• North American T-6 Texan trainer aircraft it.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_T-6_Texan
• Fiat G.91 fighter-bomber-reconnaissance aircraft it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_G.91
• Bell 204 transport and rescue helicopter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_204/205
