A pleasant discovery, this small village that stands on the hill facing Roseto degli Abruzzi (Teramo) and is the oldest inhabited center in the municipal area, a place where the history and urbanization of the current municipality developed.
Its Montepagano roots date back to the Middle Ages. They date back to around the 11th century AD. the first settlements, mostly due to fear of a possible invasion by the Turks. Its name derives from the fusion of two words: "mons-montis" and "pagus" and means "village on the mountain".
This village was the seat of the Municipality from the unification of Italy until 1927, the year in which Benito Mussolini with a royal decree signed by King Vittorio Emanuele III moved the capital municipality to Rosburgo, renaming it however Roseto degli Abruzzi.
Montepagano is the most famous, ancient and noble hamlet of this territory, both for its history and for the richness of the monuments it possesses.
Despite being a small town, Montepagano has an ancient and important history that winds through its streets, its memories and its squares. It has important monuments such as the Porta da Borea with its pointed arch, the rest of the imposing medieval walls and several churches, the most important of which is certainly the Santissima Annunziata, completed in 1602 and still the seat of the most important pagan religious functions.
But the symbolic monument is certainly the bell tower. It is 40 m high and stands on the Central Square along viale Umberto I. It has a square base, it is in Romanesque style in the lower part and in Baroque style in the upper part.
Strangely, in Montepagano the bell tower is located at a considerable distance from the church. This derives from the fact that the patronal church was located on the current access road to the square of Montepagano (town hall square) next to the bell tower and was demolished at the end of the 19th century, having already been closed during the French occupation of 1806-1815 and in danger of collapse. Only the tower remained standing, used as a municipal public clock.
