Pure nature, even if the dying trees are setting the tone at the moment.
Sturdy shoes are mandatory.

Eckerlochstieg Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Very beautiful hiking trail, but also very difficult to hike. Nature lovers will get their money's worth. Good physical condition and sure footing are essential.

Brockenbahn Steam Railway

Highlight • Structure

A ride on the Brockenbahn is a special experience. If you hike up the Brocken, you can hear her panting when she drives up or down the path.

Brocken Summit

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak in the Harz above the tree line. Certainly not the most exciting climb on a mountain bike, but still a must, simply because it's there. ;-)

Brockenbahn Steam Railway

Highlight • Structure

To Schierke there are several points that allow a good photo of the Brockenbahn. I recommend the hut at the old bobsleigh track or the rail Teufelsstieg junction just before the Eckerloch (HWN 11).

October 18, 2023,20231018 Brocken - Schierke
The Brockenbahn was already very full from Wernigerode. Later more were added that had to stand. There were also (too) many passengers on the platform.

Showing Translation

By bus from Braunlage to Schierke and then we start, on this already quite demanding path, over the Eckerloch to the Brocken. Unfortunately, the sun has hidden a bit, but the wind has died down! Back the same way after a break....🥾🥾

The parking lot at the toboggan run costs €12 for a day ticket. Further ahead there is one for €5, but you have to be there early. The space is limited. If you don't want to walk back, you can take the Pony Express carriage as an alternative to the train. At €20 per person, it's also cheaper.

Showing Translation

Attention, many people are out and about with sneakers 😂 and when you're finally up there you need a thick wallet alone 1 € to get into the high security of the toilet.

Showing Translation

75% of the way leads over stones and boulders. Those who are not good on foot should choose a different route to the Brocken. But the way is a lot of fun. Small rivulets come out of the ground every now and then, so it might get slippery when it's cold.
We parked in a hiking car park, which is …

Showing Translation

It looks pretty desolate in the Harz, as you can see.

Showing Translation

It's a somewhat more challenging route! Sturdy footwear is definitely recommended.

Showing Translation

If you like challenging hiking trails, you should definitely remember this route to the highest peak in the Harz! From the parking lot in Schierke it is all about climbing and scrambling to the 500m higher summit. It is not without reason that this route is marked as 'easy to travel' ;)
