Pilgrim Statue at Alto de San Roque

Highlight • Monument

The Alto de San Roque is crowned at 1270 meters of altitude and is a gift for the eyes.
The silhouette of the pilgrim whipped by the wind represents the effort of all the people who make the Camino de Santiago, it does not matter if it is on foot or by bicycle.
From here you can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and one of the most photographed images of the Camino: the monument to the pilgrim against the background of the landscape.

Villafranca del Bierzo Castle

Highlight • Castle

Villafranca del Bierzo takes its name from French immigrants who (re)populated the region after the Reconquista and built a castle. Villafranca thus became a stage of the Camino. In later centuries it was the capital of a county.
Here we find the Santiago church from 1186, the 16th century fortress, the authentic Calle del Agua, the Plaza Mayor, the San Nicolas church, a Jesuit monastery and a former monastery church of San Francisco. Francis of Assisi founded the monastery in the 13th century on his pilgrimage to Santiago.

Cebreiro Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

After 14 kilometers of ascent and 656 meters of positive difference in altitude since the ascent begins in Ruitelán, crowning the Alto do Cebreiro is one of the moments to celebrate if you are doing the Camino Frances de Santiago.
This pass separates the provinces of Lugo and León and is crowned at 1,300 meters above sea level.

Monastery of Saint Julian of Samos

Highlight • Religious Site

In the middle of a leafy valley is the Benedictine Abbey of Samos, which is still a monastery today, the Royal Monastery of San Julián or San Xián. This temple, today Benedictine, is one of the three monasteries that are still inhabited by monks in Galicia. The abbey was founded by San Martiño de Dumio in the 6th century, at the height of the Visigoth period. Its history is related to the refuge of Alfonso II the Chaste before being crowned king of Galicia in the year 759, who dominated the monastery with the land. This temple, linked to the great monastic centers of Toledo, has a grandiose Baroque façade reminiscent of the staircase on the façade of the Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela.

Alto do Poio

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Alto do Poio is crowned at 1,335 meters and represents the end of the agony for the pilgrims who come from previously doing the Alto do Cebreiro and the Alto de San Roque.
Here you will find a hostel and a hostel with bar service, so you can enjoy a reward by having a drink on one of its terraces and regaining strength before facing the descent.
The landscape, both going up and down, is unforgettable.
