Zuid-Willemsvaart Canal Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Zuid-Willemsvaart is named after King William I of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, one of the pioneers of the project. An extension of the main transport routes, at the time the waterways, was intended to promote opening up of the South and trade in the North. For example, the "Willemsvaart" became a shorter and above all more reliable alternative to the Meuse, until then the most important connection between the industry around Liège and the large trading places. The opening up of the intermediate areas hardly played a role; almost everywhere the canal passed the buildings of that time.

Albert Canal

Highlight • River

Super nice cycle path next to the Albert Canal. This canal is 130 kilometres long and connects Liège with Antwerp. Fun fact: It was named after King Albert I and has played an important role in Belgian freight transport since 1939.

Originally built to connect steel factories and coal mines: today this canal is good for around 40 million tonnes of freight per year.

With six locks and space for ships up to 9,000 tonnes, it is an impressive piece of infrastructure!

Albert Canal Towpath at Kanne

Highlight • Cycleway

You arrive at a towpath along the Albert Canal, nice view to the steep rock wall in which a bunker has been made that is part of the fortress Eben-Emael. You imagine yourself somewhere in the south of France, although you are in Belgium but you are only 5 km from Maastricht, very nice bike ride.

Kanne Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The current bridge was inaugurated on Friday, September 22, 2004, as a commemorative plaque indicates. Pedestrians don't have to walk it all the way from end to end thanks to the stairs. There are also benches on both sides of the bridge to take in the view over the water or just take a break.

Towpath Along Zuid-Willemsvaart

Highlight • Cycleway

When it was constructed (1822-1826), the canal was still called Willemsvaart. When a Drentse Willemsvaart was added a few years later, ‘Zuid-‘ was added.
The canal owes its name to King Willem I, who decided to dig a connecting canal between Maastricht and 's-Hertogenbosch in 1822.
Enjoy cycling along the towpaths.
