Thurnstein Castle, St. Peter, Tirol
West of Tirol Castle, at about the same altitude, at the intersection of the paths leading from Algund and Gratsch to Tirol, amidst the vineyards, stands Castle Thurnstein like a guardian. A massive and high tower, connected to a residential building from the 16th century, which was extended in the 19th century and completed in the 20th century. Originally, the tower bore the name Platzleid or Platzlei and is mentioned in the second half of the 13th century. In 1282, Meinhard II enfeoffed it to Konrad Milser. The name Thurnstein first appears in 1478.
In the following period, various families held the castle in fief: Heustadel, Katzpöck, Planta, Eyrl Rottenpuecher, and Wittenbach. At the turn of the 17th century, Thurnstein came into the possession of Alexander von Egen, whose descendants still own it today. Currently, the castle is a restaurant where one can drink the famous Napoleon wine. The wine variety received its name upon the arrival of the news of the capture of the French Emperor Napoleon III at Sedan in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War.
