Saint-Pierre d'Usakoa Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of Saint-Pierre is located on the GR65 in the village square of St-Jean-le-Vieux. There is also the good Hotel Restaurant Mendy.
You definitely have to see the church from the inside. There are two double-story galleries located on the left and right sides of the nave.
From the top gallery you can see the beautifully curved and decorated vaulted ceilings. The altar and side altars are magnificent.
The church tower spire is also interesting: a central spire with 4 small spires attached to the corners.

From 1625 onwards, the local castle was expanded into a citadel. Under the direction of the French fortress architect Vauban, the city's defenses were also fundamentally rebuilt by 1728.

Even before the bridge, but outside the walls, a footpath, the Chemin de ronde, leads up to the citadel.

The citadel is protected by four bastions in all directions; further walls extend towards the city, from which the streets and city gates could be bombarded with cannon fire.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a must-see village in the Basque Country.
Nestled at the confluence of the Nives rivers, the medieval city is located at the crossroads of the roads serving the Basque Country.

The city has a relatively rich historical and architectural heritage. Notably, there is a medieval enclosure consisting of an imposing wall with four large gates. In its heart, you will find several artisans offering many local products.

The medieval city also owes its fame to the Camino de Santiago which crosses it. An emblematic stage of this trail, the village welcomes many of its pilgrims throughout the year.

At the foot of the Basque mountains, in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, life is good, take the time to stroll through its alleys, to eat on its various terraces, or to rest in the many guesthouses found there.
