Monument to the Deliberation of 1636

This monument commemorates the Belle Defense of Saint-Jean-de-Losne at the end of October 1636 against the imperial troops of General Gallas. The proposal of the mayor Emile Petitjean, approved by the municipal council on December 11, 1886, led in a few years to the realization of the current monument. The project established by the architect Félix Vionnois in 1890 specifies that the monument is composed: firstly of a quadrangular base pierced with battlements, supporting a stone cannon at each of the angles, secondly, of a square pedestal of which two faces carry bronze bas-reliefs and the other two tables in white marble, with inscriptions; third, a frustoconical porphyry column; fourth, from the perspective view of a walled city crowning it all. The sculptor Mathurin Moreau is chosen to create the two bronze bas-reliefs decorating the base and representing, on the side of the Saône, La Déliberation and on the side of the church, Les Combats sur les remparts. The motif forming the coronation is produced by the Dijon sculptor Jules Schanosky.
