Col de Pierre Pertuis

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Col de Pierre Pertuis is an important pass in terms of traffic, which connects the main Jura traffic axis from Biel to La Chaux-de-Fonds with the Tavannes-Delémont-Basel traffic axis. In addition to the current facts, it is a mystical place that already played a very important role in Roman times. Today the 'pass' is no longer so important for traffic due to the Jura motorway that was completed in the 0s and it has become quiet around it - it is all the more worthwhile to visit it.

Rondchâtel Pulp Mill

Highlight • Monument

In 1999, the Vigier company acquired the former pulp factory in Rondchâtel and with it two old small power plants just below the cement factory. Special prize for industrial monument in the Bernese Jura
The special prize from the expert commission for monument preservation recognizes the commitment of all those involved in the preservation and continued use of the former pulp factory in Péry-Rondchâtel in the Bernese Jura. This made it possible to preserve an industrial monument and put it to new use. Electricity is now produced at the site in the Schüss valley.

Schüss Waterfall in Biel/Bienne

Highlight • Waterfall

The source of the Schüss is above the hamlet of Le Cerf at the top of the Vallon de Saint-Imier, one of the longitudinal valleys of the folded Jura at 966 m above sea level. The Schüss follows the valley in a northeasterly and later easterly direction to Reuchenette.

Schüss near Reuchenette, around 1867
Here the Schüss breaks through to the south in a classic Jura gorge. Shortly before it emerges into the Mittelland, it forms the Taubenlochschlucht. The hiking trail through the gorge has had to be closed several times due to the risk of rockfalls.

The Schüss then flows through Biel/Bienne, where its hydropower was used intensively in the age of industrialization. In Biel the Schüss divides into two natural and one artificial branch. The southern branch – the Madretschschüss – flows directly into the Zihl, the northern branch – the Bielschüss – first passes under the old town, then joins the artificially created Schüss canal and finally flows into Lake Biel at an altitude of 429 m above sea level.
