Gottlieben Castle

Highlight • Castle

Gottlieben Castle
Gottlieben is one of the smallest municipalities in Switzerland in terms of area, but it has a long and eventful history.
Its castle goes back to the moated castle built in 1251 by Bishop Eberhard II Truchsess of Waldenburg, who wanted to place Gottlieben as a fortified trading place in competition with Constance, which was his enemy, but his plans ultimately failed.
The town's ring system, which was designed at the time, is still clearly visible today.
Konrad von Homburg attacked and burned Gottlieben in 1355, only the castle resisted him. 60 years later, during the Council of Constance, it became the prison of the deposed Pope John XXIII. and the Bohemian reformer, Magister Jan Hus, who died at the stake in Constance on June 6, 1415, breaking the imperial escort. His death triggered the Hussite Wars, which devastated half of Europe from Brandenburg to Bavaria and Hungary.
In 1526 Gottlieben lost the episcopal residence to Meersburg and with the Reformation the place adopted the Protestant faith. Gottlieben received its first school building in 1580.
