The two communities of Oberwald and Unterwassern agreed at the end of the 17th century on the location of the church between the villages. It was built as a pilgrimage church a little away from the settlement. The church and its three altars were consecrated in 1736. An avalanche damaged the tower roof and the sacristy in 1720.
