Pilgrimage Chapel St. Maria Camp (Gamperchappeli), Vals

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Maria Camp pilgrimage chapel, in Vals
The St. Maria pilgrimage chapel is located in the Camp district. It was built in 1692 on the spot where an avalanche had buried a farmhouse with eight people.
The complex consists of a two-bay nave with a choir and a side chapel to the west, which is dedicated to St. Rochus. Above this side chapel rises the tower, a square building with an octagonal upper floor and onion-shaped roof. The original three-register parapet organ from 1766 is a very rare instrument, the construction of which is unique in Graubünden.
The high altar is crowned by the image of the miraculous image of Pócs (Pötsch) Hungary. The original is now in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Johann Berni acquired a copy of this icon and brought it to Vals, where he worked as a chaplain from 1701 to 1735. Maria Camp thus became a place of pilgrimage to which the people of Vals and the surrounding communities still like to make pilgrimages today.

Obertor Ilanz

Highlight • Monument

The Upper Gate provides access to and from the old town of Ilanz. It was built in the Middle Ages and was one of four gates providing access to the town. Today, two of these city gates still exist: the beautifully painted Upper Gate and the more modest Red Gate.
