Lake Altaussee

Highlight • Lake

Embedded in the picturesque mountain landscape is the crystal-clear Lake Altauseer, on the banks of which the town of the same name is located. Because the water has a slightly dark blue color, the lake is also called the "dark blue inkwell" - it is not only for this reason that it is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut. In the lake you can refresh yourself and in the local gastronomy there is also a refreshment waiting for you.

West shore of the Grundlsee

Highlight • Lake

The Grundlsee is the largest lake in Styria. From the western part of the lake you have a beautiful view of the lake and the panorama all around. At the Grundlsee you can go on a super nice bike tour that you will not forget for a long time - highly recommended! Here, in Mosern, there is a nice swimming area.

The small village is located on the lake of the same name in Ausseerland. It is the largest lake in Styria and not only among bikers a popular destination. On the lake you can go surfing and sailing and of course you can refresh yourself with a dip in the clean water.

Villa Castiglioni

Highlight • Castle

From 1879 to 1883, the Viennese industrialist Jean Roth built a villa on Lake Grundlsee based on the plans of his brother and architect Franz Roth, which he used as a hunting lodge.
After Austria was annexed by Hitler's Germany, the Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and his family used the castle.

Bloody tragedy
On the night of September 4th to 5th, 1939, two shots were fired in the house. The castle actor Attila Hörbiger, who also lived in the villa, broke into the rooms where the shots had been fired after breaking a window and found two bodies there. The victims of the tragedy were the son of the owner of the villa, 23-year-old Dr. Georg Roth and his 22-year-old bride Trude Kuntner. Dr. Roth first shot his bride and then took his own life with a shot in the head. No suicide notes were found

The villa is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside.

Bad Aussee town centre

Highlight • Settlement

This small town in Styria is considered the "traditional costume capital" and the center of the Ausseerland region. There's always something going on here. If you're on a bike tour, it's worth taking a short break here and refueling in the cozy atmosphere of the spa town.
