Salzach Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Beautiful old bridge over the Salzach river, outside of the town of Bischofshofen. During autumn and winter it is a breathtaking scenery with the surrounding forest. Useful when changing from the main road(left side) to the Tauernradweg (right side) and vice versa.

Bischofshofen Town Center

Highlight • Settlement

Bischofshofen, venue of the Four Hills Tournament, is not only interesting for winter sports enthusiasts. The town is located directly on the Alpe Adria bike path and has everything that makes for a perfect stage: ideal transport links thanks to the station, attractions such as the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze, a museum, a recreational area with playgrounds for the little ones and an outdoor pool. For cycling enthusiasts, a cycling criterion regularly takes place. And on top of that comes the beautiful mountain landscape.
Of course, there are a variety of accommodation options in the village - including companies in the category bed & bike.

Liebfrauenkirche Bischofshofen

Highlight • Religious Site

The Filialkirche Unser Liebe Frau (also known as Liebfrauenkirche or simply Frauenkirche) is a Catholic church in Bischofshofen, which was used as a "people's church" or parish church for the local population after the current parish church of St. Maximilian was temporarily used as a monastery church. Standing on a terrace just above the village, its origins can be traced back to the 10th/11th century.

View of the Salzach River

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Salzach is a right tributary of the Inn River and, at 225 km long, its longest and most water-rich. It flows through the province of Salzburg (Austria) and Bavaria (Germany), is one of the great Alpine rivers, and drains the eastern Hohe Tauern mountains to the north.

The ancient Latin name of the Salzach was Iuvarus or Ivarus. The name came from the Celtic river deity Iuvavo, the divine personification of the Salzach. The Romans later adopted this god's name, slightly Latinized, for the Roman city of Iuvavum.

However, only the lower reaches and the Saalach, which flows into the Salzach, were called Ivarus, since the upper reaches had their own name, Isonta.

The Salzach owes its current name to the salt shipping that operated on the river until the 19th century; the historical center of salt shipping was Laufen. Until after 1800, the river was generally called Salza (i.e., like a Lower Austrian-Styrian river).
