Elche Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The original core of the building is the Council Tower, built between 1441 and 1444. In the past, the tower was integrated into the city wall and the portal served as a crossroads between Plaça de Baix and the Mercat. In 1548, Sebastià Alcaràs converted both the tower and the adjacent Llotja into a single Renaissance-style palace, with a council chamber that opened outwards through two openings. This renovation of Alcaràs also made the top box with semicircular arches on the pillars, in the same way as in other Valencian public buildings at the time. The last renovation was in 1645 when the east wing was built, leaving the tower in the center of the building.

Vinalopó River

Highlight • River

The Vinalopó, although considered a river, often has a very low flow, especially in times of drought. However, during heavy rains, it can experience significant flooding. Throughout its course, the river has been instrumental in irrigating palm groves and other agricultural areas in Elche.

Torre del Gall

Highlight • Historical Site

The building was designed by Ramón Campello Martinez. When he became a widower, he went to Cuba and returned to Foia in 1919. That same year, he bought the land and built the house as a residence in 1921, in the style of Indian colonial aesthetics.

With a rectangular floor plan and an atypical east orientation, it has four floors. Notable features include the two side towers with their polychrome glass, the recesses with pointed or triangular finials in the Neo-Mudéjar style, and the tile decoration with plant motifs. Of course, the tip of the rooster flag, which gave the house its name and the nickname of its owner, "El Gall," is also worth noting. In 2002, the building was acquired by the Juntament d'Elx and restored in 2005.
