Laredo Old Town and Fishermen's Monument

Highlight • Historical Site

Laredo is a fishing town and one of the main tourist towns on the entire Spanish coast. Together with San Vicente, Castro Urdiales and Santander, it forms the "four towns of the sea". The gastronomy of Laredo specializes in fish (bonito, sardines, anchovies, etc.) The most outstanding festivals in Laredo are: the Carnival in February, San Roque on August 16, and on the last Friday of August the famous Battle of flowers.

Puebla Vieja de Laredo

Highlight • Historical Site

One of the most important medieval complexes in Cantabria. It preserves doors, remains of walls, beautiful houses and palaces. The church of Santa María de la Asunción is especially beautiful. It is worth taking a walk through its streets and having a drink in some of its bars.

Laredo Promenade

Highlight • Cycleway

A long, wide and beautiful promenade for cycling. It is right next to the ocean and with excellent benches and views. It is almost deserted in winter but in summer they set up a market full of products.

Boat across the Ría de Treto

Highlight • Rest Area

As already said, a lovely experience and saves a large detour. Difficult with a loaded touring bike on one's own as the sand is soft and the ramp steep, so thought I'd need to remove the panniers, but the ferryman just grabbed the front of the bike and pulled it aboard. Make sure you have the fare for the bike as well as yourself. Steps off the pier can be slippy but had help from another passenger.

Venero Tower

Highlight • Castle

Square tower, about 9 m. sideways. It has masonry walls except in the openings that are made of ashlar masonry. It is topped by square battlements. The main facade is the southern one, with an ogival arch entrance. It has a large window with a semicircular arch, which gave access to a wooden balcony supported by four shelves. On the second floor there are two windows with ogival arches and two rectangular embrasures with spillage towards the interior. In the other facades it also has pointed openings.
