Great Synagogue of Tykocin

Highlight • Religious Site

The first evidence of Jews in Tykocin dates back to 1522, when ten families from Grodno were settled there to promote trade. In 1576, the king granted a general right of settlement, which was confirmed in 1633. In 1800, about 70% of the city's population were Jews, and before the outbreak of World War II, this figure was still around 50%. After the German invasion in 1941, the remaining 1,400 Jews were murdered in the Tykocin massacre in the forest near the town of Łopuchowo.

The Great Synagogue in Tykocin, a Polish town in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, was built in 1642 on the site of a wooden predecessor from the 15th century. The deconsecrated synagogue on Kozia Street, next to the Small Synagogue, has been a protected cultural monument since 1957.

Along with the synagogue in the Belarusian city of Slonim, this is the only synagogue from the 17th century in which the supporting bimah has been preserved almost unchanged.[1]

The baroque-style synagogue was devastated by the German occupiers during World War II and used as a warehouse. The building was renovated in the 1970s.

Today, a Jewish museum is housed in the synagogue building (Wikipedia).

An educational trail with information boards runs along the boulevards. Every few meters a bench. The boulevards end at the weir, where you can turn towards the center or cross the Narew and return along the dike on the other side of the river.

Chebureki and Kartacze from Tykocin

Highlight • Restaurant

In Tykocin, in addition to the monuments and the atmospheric market square, it is worth trying local specialties such as chebureki and kartacze. Chebureks are large, crispy dumplings fried in deep fat, usually stuffed with meat, onion and spices, inspired by Tatar cuisine, which has influenced this region. Kartacze, on the other hand, are large potato dumplings stuffed with meat, usually served with onion and bacon, filling and ideal after an intensive bike ride.

Stefan Czarniecki Square, Tykocin

Highlight • Monument

The founder of the monument to Hetman Stefan Czarniecki in Tykocin, which was built in the years 1762-1763, was Jan Klemens Branicki, Grand Hetman of the Crown, great-grandson of Stefan Czarniecki. Its creator, the French sculptor Pierre Coudray, recreated the image of Czarniecki on the basis of portraits provided by Branicki.
