Collegiate Church of St. Mary Magdalene

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of S. Maria Maddalena Built in 1274 in a suggestive position facing the sea on the ruins of an ancient fortress, the church of S. Maria Maddalena was erected in suffrage of the Saint who had freed the town from the occupation of the Saracen mercenaries of Manfredi; the church was restored in 1570 and 1669 with the funds of a special tax self-imposed by the Atranesi; in 1753 the church underwent further expansion works and took on the current structure with three naves and, on that occasion, the last remains of the ancient fort were eliminated; in 1852 it was completely modernized by the Salerno architect Lorenzo Casalbore. Currently the church has a beautiful facade, the only example of Rococò on the Amalfi Coast, a majolica dome and an elegant sixteenth-century bell tower in brown tuff with a square plan with a two-story octagonal belfry similar to that of the Madonna del Carmine in Naples. ; an ancient caravel is carved in the tuff on the side facing the sea. The interior of the church is divided into three naves separated by polychrome marble pillars, it is equipped with two transepts, one of which is vaulted, the other flat-cut. You can admire numerous eighteenth-nineteenth-century paintings and statues that enrich the patronal chapels. On the main altar stands a wooden altarpiece depicting Santa Maria Maddalena and on the sides two minor paintings depicting Sant 'Andrea and San Sebastiano, all works by an unknown painter from Maiori. Finally, the bronze doors of San Salvatore in birecto are noteworthy, with panels depicting Stories of Saints Pantaleone and Sebastian. On July 22, the Feast of Santa Maria Maddalena is celebrated, with the traditional procession of the statue: on this occasion the sarchiapone is prepared, a long green pumpkin stuffed with meat and cheese and baked in the oven

Amalfi Beach

Highlight • Beach

It is the largest beach in the area and it could not be otherwise, given that Amalfi bears the name of the entire Coast. A crossroads for travelers, a must-see for anyone who sets foot in these parts, it is often also the most popular.

Here, bathing establishments alternate with stretches of free beach, among colorful umbrellas and postcard views. But be careful: on summer days, especially on weekends, finding a place can become a small feat... unless you arrive at dawn, with the breeze and the first sun.

Very nice hike but with a lot of stairs

Showing Translation

Too many stairs, but it's worth it :) . Unfortunately, Amalfi was very crowded and overrun with tourists.
