Bomarzo Historic Center

Highlight • Historical Site

Of very ancient origins, it always played an important role both under the Roman Empire and during the various Goth, Lombard and Frankish dominations. Subsequently it became a feud of the Orsini family who governed it until the mid-1600s. in the Renaissance it experienced a long period of splendour. In fact, the Sacred Wood that we know as the Monster Park was created by Vicino Orsini.

The Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world. It was conceived in the 16th century by the architect Pirro Ligorio on commission from Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, lord of Bomarzo. The Sacro Bosco is also known as the Monster Park for the presence of sculptures depicting mythological animals, divinities and monsters scattered in a surreal natural landscape.

Historic Center of Vitorchiano

Highlight • Historical Site

Well-preserved medieval village with walls that delimit the ancient village to the south. Dating back to the 11th century. they are interrupted by towers with a square base. On the east and west sides, however, they are bordered by two cylindrical towers. In the central tower opens Porta Romana, the only entrance to the medieval center of the town. The characteristic of these walls, in addition to being in peperino stone, is that they are edged with forked merlons with barbicans and loopholes.
Another feature of the village of Vitorchiano are the profferli which consist of external stairs that lead to a balcony which leads to the house. The balcony is almost always supported by a segmental arch.
