Their origins date back to the Middle Ages; over the centuries, they were expanded and strengthened to protect the strategically important trading town on the Rance. The almost completely preserved complex includes several towers, gates, and a walkable rampart. With a length of around three kilometers, it still encloses large parts of the historic old town today.

From the bridge, enjoy the view of the ruins of the castle on the right bank of the Arguenon. In the 15th century, Gilles van Bretagne lived here, a poet and womanizer who lived a merry life, hence the expression "courir le guilledou" (to go on a woman hunt). But his brother, Duke Francis I of Brittany, suspected Gilles of plotting and had him imprisoned. Because he didn't die fast enough, he was then strangled.
