Hammergraben Canal

Highlight • River

The Hammergraben (Lower Sorbian: Goramśica)[1] is a moat built in the 16th century as a feeder for the then 5,000-acre Peitz Ponds. Its course begins at the large Spree weir in Cottbus, where a portion of the Spree is diverted to the right bank. The watercourse was and is sometimes called the Hammerstrom, especially in the area around Peitz.[2]

View of the open pit and the dreary lunar landscape. Hard to imagine that this wasteland can one day become a living natural paradise and recreation area.

Lakoma Memorial and Cottbus Lake Inlet

Highlight • Historical Site

There are well-made information boards about the localities, the Baltic Sea and the cycle path on the circular path that is being built around the Baltic Sea. Here at the inlet structure are the information boards about Lakoma. The village had to make way for the Cottbus-Nord brown coal open-cast mine in 2006 and only one farmstead remained.

There are display boards and seating areas directly at the intake structure to watch the spectacle of the flooding. Flooding began in April 2019. The LEAG website provides weekly updates on the water level, supply and proportion of Spree water. More than 80 percent of the water required is to be taken from the Spree.

Merzdorf Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you are looking for a unique view, then the observation tower in the Cottbus district of Merzdorf is just the thing for you. The tower was opened in 2006 and has since offered a great panorama over the Cottbus Baltic Sea - an artificial body of water that is gradually being created from the former Cottbus-Nord opencast mine. You can reach the viewing platform at a height of 34 meters via a total of 173 steps.
