Memorial to the Fallen

In the years 1923/1924, the city acquired the site for the proud sum of 300,000 Reichsmarks. The owner was Mr. Bouchee, founder of the Hansa-Sprudel. The building of the Hansa-Sprudel was on the spot where the town hall is today. The area of land acquired by the city also included the ring of the Sankt-Josefsschule - today the multi-generational house. The area in front of the Hansa-Sprudel became a municipal facility and was named after the former Reich President Paul von Hindenburg. In 1936 the memorial for the fallen of the First World War (1914-1918) was erected on the square. Because of the bad subsoil, the memorial stands on rammed oak posts. At the memorial itself there are two large plaques with the names of those who died, in front of the memorial there are two other smaller plaques with the inscriptions: "Gerolstein his sons who died in battle 1914 - 1918" and "They stood and died in battle - like the rocks of the Hometown".
