Description

If you're looking for an IMBA Epic mountain biking experience around one of the world's clearest lakes, the Waldo Lake – Waldo Lake loop from North Waldo Trailhead delivers. This moderate 19.5-mile (31.3 km) route, with 1043 feet (318 metres) of climbing over an estimated 2 hours and 44 minutes, offers a unique blend of challenge and stunning scenery without the massive ascents of other regional trails.

What to expect on Waldo Lake – Waldo Lake loop from North Waldo Trailhead

Expect a journey that constantly shifts, from smooth 'buff single-track' to sections with 'relentless short, steep climbs and technical sections' featuring roots and rocks. You'll ride through areas of 'ghostly gray trees' from past fires, now interspersed with wildflowers, offering an 'otherworldly natural beauty.' The highlight is undoubtedly Waldo Lake itself, with its exceptionally clear water visible over 100 feet deep, providing incredible views throughout. While the overall elevation gain isn't huge, the continuous ups and downs, combined with occasional 'ankle deep sand/ash,' make this a workout best suited for riders who are adequately conditioned, though experienced beginners can tackle it slowly.

Planning your visit

Planning your visit wisely can make all the difference. Be aware that 'notoriously horrendous mosquitoes' can plague the area from mid-June to the end of July, so late summer through late fall is generally the best riding season. Starting from North Waldo Lake Campground, riding counterclockwise is often recommended for a good flow and fun descents towards the end. Remember, gas-powered boats are prohibited on Waldo Lake, ensuring a tranquil environment.
