Golden Gate Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

When you think of the iconic features of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the first things that comes to mind. This impressive suspension bridge links the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County, with fantastic views of the city, marina and Crissy Field. It’ is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States, putting it at the top of many cyclist's bucket lists.

While crossing, you can gaze up at the towering beams above or look down into the deep waters of the San Francisco Strait below you as sailboats drift by in the mouth of the Bay. Traveling along the Bridge can be cold, windy, and foggy, even in the summer, so dress appropriately.

At the south end, you can purchase a souvenir at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion and visit the café next to the visitor center. Restrooms are at both the north and south ends, and cyclists have toll-free access to the Bridge's sidewalks 24 hours a day. A bike ride across this extraordinary Bridge is an adventure you don't want to miss!

Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is 2.7km long, 27.5m wide and has six lanes. It floats about 70m (depending on the water level) above the water. The height of the pillars is 227m. The steel hanging ropes have a diameter of almost one meter and a total length of 2.3 km. If the individual steel wires were tied together, they would have a total length of 129,000 km. The bridge weighs a total of 887,000t.
Until 1964 it was allowed to adorn itself with the title "Longest suspension bridge in the world". Then it was superseded by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is still in the top ten in the world for its span. Depending on the volume of traffic, a decision is made as to how many lanes are available for cars going in or out of town. For this purpose, bright yellow pylons, which are very often driven around, are set up as median markings. More than 150,000 vehicles pass through this bottleneck every day. Due to this high volume of traffic, the construction costs of $37 million by 1971 were recouped by user fees.

Presidio Promenade

Newly refurbished Biking and Hiking trail with spectacular views across Crissy Field and the Bay, as well as the beaches all the way along the Bay to Fisherman's Wharf and downtown skyline. It then leads up to more viewpoints of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Great views from the terraced overlook on this North-Eastern side of the bridge.
A foot trail also crosses underneath the bridge to see the other side, or to walk down to the foot of the bridge and on to Fort Baker and Sausalito. The rest area has restrooms and water fountains, and in the middle a memorial to seafaring sailors
