Colle di San Giorgio

Highlight • Religious Site

Among all the peaks of the Asolo Hills, Colle San Giorgio (461 meters above sea level) is the one that certainly enjoys the best panoramic view, ranging from the Venetian plain to Monte Grappa and the Dolomite peaks of Cimonega. On better days you can see the domes of the Basilica del Santo in Padua. On the hill there is the small church (oratory) of San Giorgio, an ancient religious site dating back to the tenth century, reachable by a widespread network of more or less well-trodden paths.

The panorama of the massif is a fairy tale ... You get to this point by climbing from Asolo (asphalt) or from the path of the hill

Historic Center of Asolo

Highlight • Historical Site

Asolo is a small, walled town with many narrow streets. It is one of the most beautiful medieval 'Borghi' in Italy and is known as the 'Pearl of Treviso'. The small picturesque village is nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites. You can park your car outside the city walls in the underground car park "Cipressina". A steep climb takes you to the city gate 'Portello di Castelfranco' and via the 'Via Browning' you reach the pleasant Piazza Garibaldi.

On the main square, the 15th century Palazzo della Ragione with its beautiful artefacts is worth a visit.

Rocca di Asolo, which rises high above the town, triggers many visitors. If you would like to get to know this castle, check the opening hours in advance. The path to it is a tough one. Unfortunately, we missed the effort ☹. The 'Lock' was locked.

We were able to satisfy our hunger for medieval architecture in the Castello Pretorio. It is a hidden gem in the idyllic town. Free access gives you the opportunity to delve into the long, special history of the fort. It is an early medieval fortress that has had different residents and interpretations over the centuries. Take the time to hit the pause button and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Belevedere della Specola.

On the artistic bench 'Il Bacio' by serverino Morlin, which is placed in the shadow of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, we say goodbye to the 'Pearl of Treviso' with a big kiss.

It was nice to be there for a few hours.

Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, Asolo
1342 - 1346 (construction of the entire property)
The church was built in 1346 by the Confraternita dei Battuti, which has been present in the town of Asolo since the beginning of the century thanks to the school they founded in 1304. They are very attached to the hospital, which is located in the immediate vicinity and was built thanks to a donation from Peter von Lamon.
1370 - 1394 (destruction and reconstruction of the hospital)
The hospital was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1370 and by Carrarese raids, but was rebuilt in 1394. There are no documents that attest to the same fate for the church, although the traces visible on it suggest this.
XVI (expansion of the entire property)
The church was expanded in the 1500s under the direction of the Lombard architect Francesco Grazioli. It will be raised and the facade will be changed. In addition, the second register of frescoes is being prepared.
1573 (installation of the interior furnishings)
In 1573 the church was completed both in terms of furnishings and wall paintings with the installation of three altars.
1767 - 1781 (restoration of the entire property)
A restoration of the wall frescoes is being carried out by the Brotherhood of Oratorians of San Filippo Neri; The altar with the twisted columns and its altarpiece are in place. In addition, the side portal will be expanded and the internal steps will be arranged.
1781 (covering the frescoes on the interior walls)
On May 4, 1781, the Oratorians received permission to renew the internal appearance of the church: the old frescoes were placed on a layer of plaster, whitewashed and made square according to the fashion of the time.
1883 (discovery of the frescoes)
Pacifico Scomazzetto, a pharmacist from Asolo who is passionate about archeology, reports on the discovery of the frescoes in an article in which he describes them.
1886 (restoration of the interior walls)
During some restoration work inside the artifact, the fresco cycle from the end of the eighteenth century was brought to light and restored.
1933 (restoration of the entire property)
