View of Napoleon Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

A classic historic bridge, very well preserved or renovated. Combined with the eroded gorge and the emerald-colored waters of the Soca, the bridge's value increases. All in all, it's a free tourist attraction.

Soča Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

1750 was the old stone Napoleon bridge with only a bridge arch. On the bridge, Napoleon's troops marched towards Predel, hence the name.

In the First World War, this bridge was blown up by the Austrian army, later the Italians built a wooden bridge and then followed by an iron bridge. During the Second World War, the partisans defended the Republic of Kobarid here. In commemoration of these events, two commemorative plaques are erected on the bridge.

This extremely photogenic bridge crosses the Soča near Kobarid over a narrow rocky channel. The transition at this point has always been important. Only a few places along the raging river offered the opportunity to build a bridge.

In 1758/1759 the old wooden structure was replaced by a stone arch bridge. At that time there were Napoleonic troops in the region, which is how the building got its famous name.

However, none of the French were involved in the construction. The bridge was blown up during the Isonzo battles in World War I and was only rebuilt after the war.

Soča River

Highlight • River

Just a few kilometers downstream, the area around the “Big Soča Troughs” (Velika korita Soče) is one of the most beautiful places in the valley. Over a length of about one kilometer, the Soča rushes through a gorge with huge boulders and repeatedly forms deep, emerald-colored natural pools that invite you to swim
