The synagogue in Colmar, the capital of the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace (France), was inaugurated in September 1843.

It is located at 3 Rue de la Cicogne. It has been a listed historical monument since July 11, 1984. Records show that the first synagogue in Colmar burned down in 1279 and was subsequently rebuilt. It stood in Judenschulgasse (Jewish School Lane).

During the plague persecutions, it was confiscated in 1349, and from the second half of the 14th century until the expulsion of the Jewish community in 1511/12, a synagogue existed at the corner of Judengasse (Jewish Lane), now Rue Berthe Molly. At the beginning of the 19th century, an oratory was initially set up in the "Zunftstube den Pflügern" (Guild Hall of the Ploughmen), and in 1843 the new synagogue was finally inaugurated. It was renovated in 1885 and 1913 and restored after the Nazi era. It remains the center of the Jewish community in Colmar. The new, monumental synagogue was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and is the only synagogue in Alsace with a small bell on its roof.

Saint Martin's Collegiate Church, Colmar

Highlight • Religious Site

Built from 1235 to 1365, the Collegiate Church of St. Martin is a major work of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The roof truss and the crowning of the south tower were destroyed in a fire in 1572. It was replaced three years later by the original onion-shaped skylight, which gives the building its characteristic silhouette. The church has undergone several restoration works. The last one, completed in 1982, exposed the foundations of a church from around the year 1000, as well as traces of successive additions in the 11th and 12th centuries.
For a long time, the Colmarer regarded the collegiate church of St. Martin as their cathedral ("Münster"). In fact, the collegiate church was not really a cathedral for about ten years: from the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1790 to the signing of the Concordat in 1801.
